A few of my friends have been getting laid off from work. And, this week, my wife had to lay someone off from her team at work. I’ll tell you right now: You are one VP freakout from being unemployed. There’s a secret: You don’t have to outswim the shark, you only have to make sure you aren’t in the bottom half of your team. So, what can you do? Here are four easy steps to enhance your value at work:
#1. Get your stuff in on time. Time sheets, expense reports, mandatory training. Make sure your boss doesn’t have to remind you. Be proactive. This reduces the negative interactions your boss has to have with you.
#2. Document what you do. Produce concept documentation. Produce project documentation. Diagrams. Process Flows. And make them available to the team for feedback: “This is what I did on my project. Can I get feedback? Is there a better way?” I’ve said for years, whomever has the best documentation, wins!
#3. Take trainings. You will never find the time, so seize it now. Your company offers free training. Amazon offers free training. Linked In has free trainings. Look at the tools you use at work. Is there training on it? Every class you take, post on LinkedIn. Let your manager know.
#4. Get the Next Degree. it doesn’t matter if your current position doesn’t require a degree. You already got that job. But, can you keep it? Can you get the next one? If your company offers tuition reimbursement, take it. You don’t have to go all in. My wife got her Masters paid for by the company by her only taking the classes the company paid for that year. Then she paused her degree until the next year so she never had to pay out of pocket. Do the same thing. Once class at a time until you get a degree. It does 3 things: First, you get a degree. Looks good on the resume. Second, it tells Management you are looking to advance up the ladder. Third, it makes you look better than your teammate who isn’t working on themselves.
